Tips to Prevent Pilling on Wool Clothing

Your new wool cardigan or favorite cozy sweater can suddenly be affected by those annoying little fuzz balls, also known as pills. These tiny fabric bobbles can be frustrating, but with the right knowledge and techniques, you can prevent them and easily remove them. Here are some handy tips to keep your wool clothing in top condition.

How does pilling occur?

Pilling happens due to friction between fibers in the fabric, which occurs both during wear and washing. Woolen garments are especially prone to pilling, particularly in areas with a lot of friction, such as under the arms and on the elbows. This is normal, but there are ways to minimize the chances of pilling.

Tips to prevent pilling

  • Wash with care: Avoid washing your wool clothing with items that have sharp edges, like zippers or buckles, to prevent unnecessary friction.
  • Use a laundry bag: Place your garments in a laundry bag or wash them separately to protect the fabric and reduce pilling.
  • Turn inside out: Wash your garment inside out to protect the outside from friction during washing.
  • Air dry naturally: Let your wool clothing air dry rather than using the dryer. This prevents fiber damage and reduces pilling.

How to remove pills

If you encounter pilling, here are some effective methods to remove them:

  • Fabric shaver: A fabric shaver or depiller is a handy tool designed specifically to remove pills without damaging the fabric. These are often available at stores like Blokker or online.
  • Rubber brush: For fine wool fabrics, a rubber brush can help remove pills. This type of brush works well for delicate fibers.
  • Freezing: Place a new wool scarf or throw in the freezer, wrapped in a plastic bag, before first use. This helps reduce the chance of pilling.

Caring for Your Wool Clothing

Pilling can’t be completely avoided, but with proper care and maintenance, you can ensure that your clothing always looks stylish and well-kept. By washing carefully and regularly maintaining your garments, your wool sweater or cardigan will stay in top condition.
