Tips for more calm and balance
The holidays are behind us and suddenly the overflowing inbox, busy schedule, and that sense of being one step behind are back. Something I often hear from my clients: “I was so relaxed in the summer, but after just a few weeks back at work, I’ve already lost that feeling.” Do you recognize that?
I also notice that September often feels like the start of a new year. But while nature is moving toward rest and reflection, we tend to speed up. That can feel overwhelming. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to break that cycle.
Take real breaks
Give yourself permission to pause. Not just grabbing a sandwich behind your laptop, but real breaks: step away from your screen, take a short walk, breathe, or simply do nothing. These moments recharge you and create mental space.
Breathing as an anchor
Here’s a simple exercise: breathe in deeply through your nose, hold for a second, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Do this three times and you’ll instantly feel calmer. Even one big sigh can help release tension.
Listen to your energy
Don’t pack your evenings with plans. Allow yourself downtime – a quiet evening on the couch, or reading with a cup of tea. Small choices make a big difference.
Eat for calm and focus
In busy times, we often turn to coffee or sweets. Understandable, but they cause energy highs and crashes. Eating on time and choosing foods that keep you steady – like vegetables, nuts, and whole grains – helps you feel calmer and more focused throughout the day.
Let your clothes support you
Clothing influences how you feel and how others perceive you. At work, you may need a professional look – a suit or formal dress – which doesn’t always allow for soft fabrics or soothing colors.
But you can still let clothing work for you. At the office, choose a powerful color or structured fit that gives you energy and presence. Once home, switch to comfort: soft, relaxed clothing that signals rest. This way, clothes help you transition from work mode to recovery mode.
Small steps, big impact
You don’t have to change everything at once. Start small: take that break, breathe consciously, or say no to one appointment. Step by step, you’ll create more space – in your calendar and in yourself.
